1. Present Simple

We use the simple present to talk about things in general. When we use the simple present, we are not thinking only about the present time, but also about things that happen all the time, things that are known to be facts, or things that happen according to a schedule or habit. It is used in the following ways.

Look at the table below to see how we use the verb to eat in the present tense with all the pronouns:

Singular Plural
I eat We eat
You eat They eat
He eats You eat
She eats
It eats

Examples with other verbs:
The sun rises in the east. The sun sets in the west.
Animals breath air. A TV costs a lot of money.
He works at the mall. I get paid every month.
He gets up at 6.00. They study every day.
I run 5 miles a day.

2. Spelling Rules for the Present Simple

The spelling for the present simple does not change except for the HE,SHE, IT.. For example I eat - He eats.

There are some other spelling rules that apply to He, She and It. All the following verbs add es instead of s:

Verb Endings Spelling Examples Signal Words
Verbs ending in -o add -es do - does, go - goes always
Verbs ending in -s add -es pass - passes, kiss - kisses every ....
Verbs ending in -x add -es fix - fixes, mix - mixes often
Verbs ending in -ch add -es watch - watches, catch - catches normally
Verbs ending in -sh add -es push - pushes, rush - rushes usually
Verbs ending in a consonant and -y often change the -y to -ies: try - tries, cry - cries, worry - worries sometimes
Verbs such as buy have no consonant before the y, so you simply add -s as usual. buy - buys, pay - pays seldom
